WORKSHOP: Advanced Academic Writing

These workshops take participants through writing specific sections of a journal article:

  3. Writing the Discussion

These workshops aim to answer:

  • How do we write the different parts of the paper?

  • What is their purpose?

  • What can we do to engage the audience?

  • How can we demonstrate our authority and scholarship?

  • How can we show our contribution to the field?

The workshops share frameworks and strategies that help participants aim for publication in top journals.

COURSE: Academic Writing for Doctoral Students

This course takes doctoral students through the entire landscape of academic writing life: from reading to critical thinking, to writing purpose and process, to creating structure and coherence, to writing solid paragraphs, from citations and the use of AI to co-authoring and reviewing with care

This complete professionalisation of the apprentice doctoral student is characterised by:

  1. Tools and Frameworks of academic writing brought in from linguistics, storytelling etc.

  2. Exposure to real-life drafts of papers and their final published versions

  3. Plenty of readings and resources to absorb ideas about good academic writing

  4. Personal stories and anecdotes of academic publishing from working with 200+ academic clients from around the world

  5. Classroom work where students apply the learned concepts

  6. Individual feedback on their writing from me.

  • This course has been delivered in the following formats:

    • A 12-session, 24 contact hours course, taught once-a-week over three months, with 10 hours of office hours for individual feedback on student writing

    • A 6-session, 18 contact hours course, taught over 6 days, with one hour per student of individual feedback.

This course works best with a small group, but has worked surprisingly well in a large (30) group format too.

This course can be delivered virtually or in person, according to the needs of the program and my availability.

Writing Productivity and Cowriting Program

This writing program is run jointly with my partner, Associate Professor Julien Cayla of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Research shows that writing productivity increases when done habitually (Robert Boice), socially (Rowena Murray) and with joy (Helen Sword).

We focus participants’ attention on academic writing as a craft that requires an entrepreneurial approach to project management.

This change in mindset through the program results in key changes to writing attitudes, beliefs and practices.

With a few tools and frameworks, researchers find that they are able to keep their manuscripts moving along briskly.

Further, each session has built-in cowriting sessions, giving participants the added benefit of a boost of social energy and accountability to write their way out of stagnation.

    1. Introductions and setting the agenda for the workshop around the two pillars of productivity: time and emotions.

    2. Identify the true issues underlying common writing blocks such as procrastination, “eternal reading” trap, imposter syndrome etc.

    3. Use the Deep/Shallow work framework to create work efficiencies, etc.

    4. Prioritise work processes by identifying your key research, writing, and other work skills

    5. Plan to be successful by anticipating disruptions to your project goals and scheduling

    6. Juggle multiple projects successfully by managing your research pipeline

    7. Create long-term career goals

    8. Review and track your 12-week writing and planning progress, with final goodbyes.

  • This weekly, 8-week, 2-hour writing program is designed to create a writing community that will shake writers out of writing stagnation. It will bring them a boost of much needed energy, and fix them up with tools that will cultivate a more productive mindset.

This program is delivered only virtually to accomodate academics from around the world.

What People Have Said

  • I enjoyed the workshop so much!! The most important thing for me was an attitudinal change. I started to appreciate writing more than before, as an academic skill and also as an "academic way of life". I am grateful for that :)

  • Excellent. This should be a regular feature of the Business School's calendar. It was so lovely to be able to take the time to think about the craft of writing, and then have practical tips and tools to apply immediately.

  • It was great that you were very open to questions, and took an active interest in discussing differing viewpoints. I think it was awesome that you were also willing to adapt the course plan as per popular demand.
